**Robert Hooke **1665 observed a piece of bottle cork under a compound microscope and found **minuscule structures **like rooms as cell but it was a non-living entities, so could not define the structure.
**Anton Van Leeuwenhoek **then observed a living cells under another compound microscope with higher magnification and he observed some motility of the cell.
In 1883, Robert Brown discovered the structure of the **cell. **

Hooke coined the term "cell" in 1665 while observing cork, which are non-living structures. He did not intend for the term to refer to living cells at the time of his observation. Living cells were observed later by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.
