How many pumpkins do I have?

If I give half of my pumpkins to my friend Tom and then give half of what is left to my friend Zara, I will have 6 left.

What this is essentially asking is six is half of a number which is half of a number, or six times two times two.
6 ∗ 2 ∗ 2 12 ∗ 2 24
You have 24 pumpkins .

You have 24 to start with. You give 12 to Tom and you have 12 left. you then give 6 of those 12 (or half) to Zara leaving with you 6.

You originally have 24 pumpkins. After giving half to Tom and half of the remaining to Zara, you end up with 6 pumpkins. This calculation shows that the original number of pumpkins can be determined using basic algebraic steps.
