In the Meselson-Stahl experiment, bacteria were grown in a medium containing \(^{15}\text{N}\) and were then transferred to a medium containing \(^{14}\text{N}\). After three rounds of DNA replication in \(^{14}\text{N}\), how many bands would you expect?

Answer (2)

You would expect 2 bands however the one at half way between 15 and 14 would be 1/3 or the thickness of the one at 14

In the Meselson-Stahl experiment, after three rounds of DNA replication in ^{14}\text{N}, you would expect to see two bands: one at the ^{14}\text{N} level and another at an intermediate density. The proportion of these bands will reflect the increasing amount of DNA that contains only ^{14}\text{N} as replication continues. This supports the semi-conservative model of DNA replication.
