e.g.: President-Congress: the President (executive branch) is the commander in chief so in theory he has full control over the military. However the Congress (legislative branch) enacts the budget and grants the President funds for the army. This way the Congress can limit the President by cutting his funds. This goes to all agencies that the President controll. The Congress also approves most of the Presidential nominations, but the President may veto their legislation. The Congress may pass over the Presidents veto, but it would be the agencies controlled by the President thath would implement and execute the laws enacted by Congress. This way every party has some means to obstruct the other and so cooperation and compromise is the only way for the government to operate.

Each branch of government is given its own authority to check the other branches and prohibit any one branch from becoming overly dominant due to the checks and balances system.
What is an example of checks and balances system?

Since Congress manages the funds used to finance all executive activities , it holds the power of the purse.

Federal officials are nominated by the president , but their confirmation by the Senate is required.

Each house of Congress acts as a check on potential power abuses by the other within the legislative branch. A bill cannot become law unless it is approved in the identical form by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The legislative branch (Senate) can check the executive branch (president) by requiring a two-thirds majority to ratify treaties. This process ensures that significant foreign agreements are not made unilaterally by the president, promoting shared decision-making. This system helps prevent abuse of power within the U.S. government.
