Solve the following problem:

Susan has 45 hats in 10 cupboards. Her friends borrowed some of the hats: Nicky borrowed 3 hats, and Shelly borrowed 2 hats. If Susan divided the remaining hats equally into the cupboards, how many hats would be in each cupboard? Explain.

In all, 5 hats would be taken so you must do 45-5=40, then divide 40 by 10 since there are 10 cupboards. The answer would be 4

After Nicky and Shelly borrowed some hats, Susan has 40 hats left. When she divides those hats among 10 cupboards, each cupboard gets 4 hats. Therefore, there will be 4 hats in each cupboard.
