Solve for x in the equation:

\[4x + 8 = 7\]

I got \(-\frac{1}{4}\) but I'm not sure if you drop the negative when dividing.

Answer (3)

4x+8=7 You minus 8 from each side 4x=-1 Divide -1 by 4x The answer is − 4 1 or -.25 You leave the negative If there is only one negative number(-1 being the case here) then its negative If there are two negatives, its a positive If there are two positive numbers, its positive

To solve 4 x + 8 = 7 , subtract 8 from both sides to get 4 x = − 1 , then divide by 4 to find x = − 4 1 . You retain the negative sign as it’s the result of dividing -1 by a positive number. Your answer is correct!
