Reflection 1
In this activity, you will:
• Identify ways that research can help solve a problem.

When conducting research, you may develop something called "bias." Bias means you have an opinion already on a topic. That opinion can cause you to look for research that supports what you already know. This can be good because it can give you a starting point. But, it can also be bad because it can keep you from finding new information.

Task 1:
For this activity, you will compose one 8 sentence paragraph using the formula below. You will answer the following questions:
• How can research bias keep you from solving a problem?
• How can having bias help you solve a problem?

You may use first person to answer these two questions. Think about times you have had to do research and how your own opinions or ideas either helped or hindered you.

Below you will find an outline of how to write a paragraph. This is an example of an 8 sentence paragraph meant to give you an idea of how to better organize your thoughts. You will start your paragraph with a topic sentence. That topic sentence is meant to tell your reader (in this case, your teacher) what the paragraph is about. Please use this outline as a guide to help you write.

Research bias can hinder problem-solving by limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints, but it can also provide direction and drive for focused research on topics I care about. ;

Research bias can hinder my problem-solving by leading me to overlook diverse perspectives, yet it can also motivate me to explore solutions to issues I am passionate about. An example is how my belief in the negative effects of social media shaped my research focus. In contrast, my enthusiasm for climate change research encourages me to seek solutions and innovative approaches.
